One of the Longest Standing UW Provision Traditions
06.21.2018 The UW Provision Legacy
Yesterday, (June 20th, 2018) UW Provision held its 23rd annual golf outing at The Meadows of Six Mile Creek in Waunakee, WI, and here’s what we took away from it:
All the meat businesses in the Midwest are a close knit group of hard working men and women and (mostly) ammeter golfers, who are always finding ways to do business with each other, and have been for a long time.
The Golf Outing:
The golfers who attended were all long term friends and customers of UW Provision, some ranging from just a few years, to almost half a century of doing business together. Talking with Steve Kalscheur (President of UWP), he told us that he never used to attend the event…”I would let the sales people go, so I could stay behind and do some work,” and that’s pretty typical of Steve.
Eventually, as the event grew Steve started to participate over the years, but he never liked the fact that he could only really talk to the few customers that he was golfing with…and that wasn’t good enough for Steve.
In order to fix that problem, for the past few years Steve has been set up at the 9 hole under a tent with a couple Big Green Egg Grills, a lot of meat, cigars, beer, and some 80s rock and roll bumping out of a massive portable speaker. Steve got what he wanted: the chance to talk with all his customers while hitting golf balls into the pond…I would say the green, but that’s not where the balls were ending up the majority of the time.
Golf carts would roll up next to the tent…customers would eat some UWP steak, summer sausage, and other products that were cooked up…they would talk meat and catch up for awhile, share some samples and crack dad jokes. It was great to see the respect and camaraderie these men had for each other.
The After Party at Rex’s
After the outing everyone went over to Rex’s Innkeeper for some drinks and a prime rib that was so tender I could almost cut it with my fork. Locally owned and operated since 1988, Rex’s has a huge menu, and serves delicious dinners 7 days a week…and it’s only 7 miles outside Madison, and most definitely worth the drive.
At the awards ceremony we heard jokes from UWP employee Jim, and all the awards for 1st place, longest putt, and other records from the day were announced by Ron Krantz, who has been with UW Provision for 52 of th
e 60 years we have been around. Tickets for Packer’s games and UW football, basketball, and hockey tickets were raffled off to lucky winners…it was truly a great end to an eventful day.
